Patients with periods greater than 35 days apart art described as having oligomenorrhea. The causes are similar to those for amenorrhea with disruption of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis or systemic diseases such as hyperprolactinemia and thyroid disorders. The ost common causes of oligomenorrhea are polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), chronic anovulation, and pregnancy. Thyroid disease should also be considered. When a patient has no period for 6 consecutive months, secondary amenorrhea is disgnosed.
