Subaeolar Breast Abscesses

Subareolar breast abscesses are infected lumps just under the areola, the colored skin around the nipple. An abscess is a swollen area that is filled with pus. Pus is liquid filled with dead white blood cells. It may or may not be associated with mastitis. This occurs because of an infection and is commonly known as Zuska’s disease.

Symptoms of a subaeolar breast abscess may include:

  • pain when the breast abscess first develops
  • a lump and some swelling
  • Pus may come out if irritated
  • If left untreated, it could become a fistula, or an abnormal hole from the duct out of the skin.
    • If it is severe enough, the infection could cause nipple inversion.
